Varkala is at 45 km from Thiruvananthapuram city of Kerala.

It is an important Hindu pilgrimage center and tourist attraction. The Papanasham beach and 2000 year old Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple are the prime attractions for pilgrims. Sivagiri, the resting place of Sree Narayana Guru, a social reformer of Kerala is also a pilgrim center.

The beaches have steep cliffs. The Arabian Sea makes perfect setting for surfing. You can also taste the natural mineral water spring, located at the cliffs of the beaches. This mineral water is said to be of medicinal value.
